The 10 Beauty & Style Commandments for 2012
2012 is the year! It will be our most FAB year and we will focus on putting our best self forward by adhering to the following...
(Raise your MAC lipstick & repeat after me)

1. C O N F I D E N C E -- Take it everywhere with you!

2. Thou shall cleanse, tone and moisturize daily. A beautiful face starts with beautiful skin. Skincare is very important and we must remember to stick to our regimens daily. There are numerous products available and geared towards your specific skin type- one of my favorite cleansers being St. Ives Apricot Scrub which is especially great for blemish prone or acne skin. Of course there are those late nights when you barely make it into the house after an eventful night out on the town- now add removing make up and washing your face and it may might seem like mission impossible...but it's not! Makeup removing wipes are your friend but they don't replace thoroughly washing so suck it up and wash those faces ladies!

3. Thou shall not be seen with dark circles (concealer is your friend). There is never a situation or time when you should leave the house with raccoon eyes. It is not attractive and can be easily corrected by concealer. First, you should select a concealer shade that is one to two shades lighter than your complexion (the idea is to brighten the eye area) and when selecting a concealer remember to select one with pink undertones. It is important to do this because the area underneath the eye where the dark circles appear is due to netting of reddish-blue blood vessels underneath the skin therefore pink underton concealer is a better choice than a yellow undertone one. MAC Select Coverup Concealer in the appropriate NW (which has pink undertones) shade for your skin tone is an excellent choice.

4. Thou shall maintain well manicured nails. Your hands are one of the first things that people notice and we all know that first impressions are lasting so keep your nails in tip top shape. Ensure that your nails are neat and well groomed. You can also do this at home (peep my home manis above) Also, nail polish is a great accessory and can be easily changed with your mood.

5. Thou shall not leave the house without applying sunscreen. Don't believe the hype, African American skin can burn and needs sunscreen just like skin that lacks pigmentation. When selecting a sunscreen you should be sure that it has at least 35 SPF protection. There are so many harsh rays (UVA and UVB) that can cause skin cancer and skin damage so it is very important that we wear sunscreen daily. Also, if you have blemishes or dark spots failure to wear sunscreen will make your spots darker so yes, its essential!

6. Thou shall exfoliate. The purpose of exfoliating is to remove skin cells that are dead. Exfoliating your entire body can help prevent body acne in many places below your neck, such as the chest, back and arms. It can help even out skin tone and keep your skin hydrated and soft. It's a good idea to exfoliate 2 to 3 times weekly.

7. Thou shall hydrate. Water water and even more water! I am often guilty of not having my fair share but this year I will drink waaaay more water! A quick way to remember how much water you should intake daily is to take your weight and divide by two and this amount is how many ounces your body needs.

8. Thou shall not abuse the use of leggings. This has been a fashion faux pas for far too long when worn incorrectly and shall be left in 2011! Leggings can be worn tastefully and look great when the following things are remembered-- fabric (if you can see through the leggings then they should NOT be worn as pants), consider your shape (if you are very curvy stick to slimming colors such as blacks and browns rather than bold and vibrant prints and colors), layering is key (under longer blouses, tunics, dresses etc..)

9. Thou shall apply lip gloss or lipstick prior to stepping out of the house. Don't be afraid of a little color and keep those pouts kissable. Pinks, nudes, reds, purples, fuchsia, corals, wine...there are endless options. If you are generally a gloss girl do something different and try a matte lipstick and if you prefer lipstick step out of your comfort zone and try a popping gloss! This year I plan to explore some unique lip colors -- baby blue, lime green or violet for fun.

10. Thou shall accessorize. A great handbag and shoes will pull together any look. Often times I start my outfit with shoes and build up. My motto is that a girl could never have too many shoes--- but I say this with caution, quality ALWAYS before quantity. Accessories don't end there, a junk arm is a great way to let your personality shine and when in doubt a white tee & statement necklace is a sure win.
Take lots of pictures!
-XoXo-
